Creative Alternatives, Inc. is a non-profit human services organization based in the Central Valley of California. Our primary functions include the operation of Short Term Residential Therapeutic Program (STRTP) facilities for foster youth with mental health needs, placement of children in private foster homes and nonpublic schools for grades K-12.

Creative Alternatives has been designed to provide what its name implies…an alternative to the institutionalization of youth. Our programs are individualized to meet the needs of each specific child.

We are looking to hire Counselor I and II’s to work with and mentor our CPS and Probation placed boys, ages 8-18, in Merced and Stanislaus Counties. This position is an excellent opportunity for those interested in gaining experience for potential employment within Social Services, Education, or the Criminal Justice fields.

Counselors in our STRTP facilities provide direct care to the youth placed with us who have experienced trauma in their lives. Our Counselors offer support, stability, and a positive role model to all clients within our placement. Our STRTP staff work together with mental health professionals for the betterment of our clients. Counselors assist in promoting the client’s treatment plan which is tailored to their individual needs and services.

Qualifications:

  • COUNSELOR I -Valid Child Development Teaching Permit; or completion of 12 semester units of Early Childhood Education, Adolescent Development or Foster and Kinship Care Education; or valid Vocational Training certificate, credential or documentation demonstrating a trade journey person who instructs children in vocational skills; or one year's experience as staff or volunteer in a group home or STRTP; or have relevant experience as determined by the California Department of Social Services to meet any of the above requirements.
  • COUNSELOR II -Bachelor of Arts or Science degree, or two years' full time experience or equivalent, working with population to be served, or equivalent education or experience as determined by the California Department of Social Services. Experience shall be verified as having been paid or volunteer with duties that required direct supervision and care of population served.
  • Valid California driver's license.
  • Good driving record; Department of Motor Vehicles printout required.
  • Meet all state licensing and insurance requirements.
  • Successful completion of LIC 503 Health Screening Report, including a pre-employment drug and alcohol test.
  • Prior to assuming duties, individual shall complete a minimum of one hour of training as specified in Section 97065.1(a) in addition to training required in Sections 97065.1(c) and (d).

Duties:

Parenting Functions:

  • Supervision of children and ensuring their safety.
  • Set limits/consequences appropriate for children who may display: assaultive, self-destructive, explosive, sexual acting out, impulsive, property destruction, running away behaviors.
  • Maintain rules, schedules and routines for children.
  • Provide a positive role model.
  • Promote children's social development.
  • Perform various foodservice and housekeeping functions, including cooking, cleaning and laundry.
  • Transportation of clients in company vehicles.
  • Completion of incident reports when necessary.

Co-Therapy Functions:

  • Participate in crisis intervention, as necessary.
  • Implement the behavioral system utilized in the home.
  • Facilitate children's school programs, as appropriate.
  • Participate in recreational activities with children.
  • Protect the rights and dignity of each child.

Agency Functions:

  • Participate in staffing, meetings and trainings as appropriate.
  • Perform appropriate record keeping such as staff logs, medication charts, allowance records, menus.
  • Perform appropriate vehicle maintenance as necessary.
  • Participate in the maintenance of house property and reporting repair needs to the proper person.
  • Under supervision, assisting in all phases of care and nurturing.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Full-Time, Part-Time positions available.

Pay: $17.00-$19.00 (DOE)
