Position Title: Special Services: Counselor

Department: 2820|Special Services

Responsibilities:


The Student Support Services(SSS) Regular Counselor is responsible for program advising activities and delivery of services to project participants. The SSSR Counselor will provide academic support services to low-income, first-generation, and/or students with disabilities. Some of the specific duties and responsibilities will include:

  • To counsel and advise low-income and first-generation students and students with disabilities in areas of career choices, financial aid, and academics – i.e. course selection, tutoring, university procedures, university resources, etc. in order to aid students in maintaining enrollment and ultimately receiving a baccalaureate degree from UL Lafayette.
  • To implement supportive services and proposal activities in accordance with the regulations of the U. S. Department of Education and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
  • To provide graduate school and transfer counseling to those students who are planning to transfer to continue their post-secondary or post-baccalaureate studies at other universities.
  • To provide informational sessions in group settings on topics of interest including financial aid, FAFSA, budgeting, financial literacy, time management, note-taking, etc.
  • To document services appropriately and keep records in order.
  • Ensure strict confidentiality of student records.
  • Provide new and assertive approaches in counseling and advising for supporting the unique academic needs of low-income, first‐generation learners who may also have a disability.
  • Help monitor peer tutors in Academic Support Lab and offer supplemental training in regard to tutoring students.
    Assist with on-going recruitment for the SSSR Program.
  • Submit reports timely as requested.
  • To ensure respectful interactions with all students without regard to sex, creed, religion, race and sexuality.
  • To submit reports in a complete and timely manner as requested by Director.
  • To perform any other responsibilities deemed appropriate by Project Director to comply with the goals and objectives of the grant.

Qualifications:


  • Master's Degree in Social Work, Counseling, Education, Social Justice, Public Policy, Psychology, Sociology, or related
    field. Mental Health educational background and licensure in Counseling or Social Work is preferred.
  • Ability to relate well and build rapport with students ﴾particularly those from vulnerable backgrounds﴿ and University personnel and administration.
  • Important qualities include strong work ethic, initiative, and willingness to learn.
  • Knowledgeable about university/community resources and university policies and procedures is a plus.


Three letters of recommendation, cover letter, resume, and transcripts of all degrees earned.
