POSITION SUMMARY

Perform variety of editorial duties, such as proofs, edits, writes headlines, lays out page and paginates in preparation for final publication.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS include the following (though other duties may be assigned as applicable):

• Prepare, rewrite and edit copy to improve readability.

• Read copy or proof to detect and correct errors in spelling, punctuation, and syntax.

• Writes headlines that are accurate, interesting, lively and bright.

• Keeps up to date on world and local news.

• Reviews stories, trimming them when needed, without losing the basis of the storyline.

• Recognizes important elements of story, picking out weaknesses and holes and reorganizing.

• Knowledge of libel law.

• Allocate print space for story text, photos and illustrations according to space parameters and copy significance, using knowledge of layout principles.

• Design pages using current technology and following Post-Gazette design style.

QUALIFICATIONS:To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. • Bachelor's Degree (four year college or university) and/or three to seven years related experience.

The ideal candidate should have:

• A proven record for ensuring accuracy and fairness in the content we produce.

The ability to edit for content, grammar, style and punctuation on all PG print and digital platforms. Strong sports knowledge and passion for compelling sports journalism. An ability to react quickly to breaking news and deliver well-edited content to a website and social platforms. The skill to write accurate and compelling web headlines, print headlines and captions that will capture the attention of discerning sports fans. A stellar reputation for strong news judgment and meeting deadlines. A strong ability to manage parallel projects at once. The propensity to collaborate with editors, reporters and the visual team. Be proficient at using a variety of print and digital content management tools. Familiarity with common forms of social media story design and tools.
