Position Summary Information

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The Office of the Dean of Students is a unit in Student Affairs with a mission to provide support and assistance to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill community focused on empowering students, to succeed in navigating the University environment. Position Summary

The Coordinator for the University Approved Absence Office has responsibility for implementation of the University Approved Absence Policy and coordinates the University Approved Absence Office (UAAO). The UAAO is a functional area within the Dean of Students office (DOS). The Coordinator is responsible for maintaining University Approved Absence Office records, processing absence requests and communicating decisions regarding University Approved Absences, preparing University Approved Absence Office data reports, coordinating outreach and education regarding the University’s policies relating to class attendance and absences, and providing information and assistance to students, staff, and faculty. This position contributes to the DOS Student Support and Case Management team by making appropriate referrals, following-up and tracking of student concerns, and advising students, faculty, and staff on university resources. This position may be eligible for hybrid or remote work.



Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.



Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
  • Excellent oral and written communication, including experience conducting presentations.
  • Demonstrated understanding of issues of diversity and inclusion.
  • Experience managing confidential or sensitive information and situations with diplomacy, exercising excellent judgment that is congruent with supervisor expectations, as well as federal, state, and university policy.
  • Ability to implement, manage, and/or oversee a significant policy, initiative, or program in high-volume environment.
  • Proven ability to prioritize work appropriately, think critically, and adapt to changing priorities, as well as work independently on multiple tasks and deal effectively with conflicting priorities.
  • Ability to understand the University environment, work collaboratively with partners, and build and sustain relationships with a diverse population.
  • Experience effectively using technology in an office setting (examples include, but are not limited to Microsoft Office suite, Zoom, and Adobe).
  • Candidates must have the ability to work occasional evenings and weekends.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

A relevant master’s degree with one year of full-time related professional experience.

  • Experience working in a university environment.
  • Familiarity with the UNC campus community and experience with Connect Carolina.
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate complex and crisis situations with sensitivity.
  • Knowledge and experience maximizing the use of information database systems/software; experience with Advocate by Symplicity is a plus.
  • Experience developing and implementing operational and service-based evaluations and using data to inform practice and/or policy.
  • Experience with the application of federal, state, and local laws, policies, and/or regulations, specifically FERPA, Title IX, HIPPA, Clery, VAWA, and others that are similar and apply to higher education.
  • Knowledge of theories and/or applied experience related to supporting student success and students of concern in a higher education environment.

Campus Security Authority Responsibilities

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
