The Department of Corrections, Reentry Division, is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual to fill a permanent, full time, Cook 2 (or Cook 1 in-training) position, located at the Ahtanum View Work Reentry Center in Yakima, Washington.

Whether the work is inside a prison, community corrections, reentry centers, or in an administrative office, the Washington State Department of Corrections professional staff experience a high degree of personal satisfaction knowing they are creating environments in which all incarcerated and supervised individuals can learn to make choices that contribute to a safer communities.

Depending on qualifications, the selected candidate may be appointed at the Cook 1 level or directly at the Cook 2 level.

Salary Information:
Cook 1: $2,764.00 - $3,558.00/month
Cook 2: $2,957.00 - $3821.00/month

Duties

Duties of a Cook 2 may include, but are not limited to:

Participate in the preparation and service of all food on a shift.


  • Perform mathematical calculations in converting recipes to determine appropriate quantity of food products required to meet menu requirements and population to be served.
  • Ensure adherence to appropriate portion control protocols.
  • Check food product during and after preparation ensuring appropriate quality standards are met and adequate quantity has been prepared.
  • Understand and apply rethermalization of food process/procedures if appropriate.
  • Practice and perform progressive cooking techniques for quality control and decrease waste within the food service area.
  • Follow basic safety practices to preclude hazards and accidents.
  • Monitor, maintain and track knife and tool inventory according policy.
Perform ordering, inventory, storage, use and reporting tasks.
  • Maintain and organize accurate food inventories and ensure the rotation of stock items to prevent spoilage and theft.
  • Receive, store and distribute raw and pre-prepared or pre-packaged food products in accordance with required standards.
  • Receive, store and use chemicals and cleaning supplies appropriately.
  • Prepare and submit work orders/equipment repair orders according to procedures.

Qualifications

This position has an in-training option and may be filled at the Cook 1 level with a one-year training plan. If appointed as a Cook 1, the employee will be required to successfully complete a twelve-month in-training plan before advancing to a trial service Cook 2.
The entire in-training appointment is designated as the probation or trial service period. The probation/trial service period and in-training program will run concurrently. Upon successful completion of the training requirements, the employee will advance to the Cook 2 level and will continue with a six-month trial service period. At the successful completion of the trial service period, the employee shall gain permanent status at the Cook 2 level. Permanent status will not be gained at the Cook 1 level.

Required Qualifications:


To qualify as a Cook 2:
  • One years' cooking experience in a large scale food service or culinary operation
OR
  • One year as a Cook 1 in State service.
AND
  • Current food handlers permit.

To qualify as a Cook 1:

  • High School Diploma or GED
AND
  • Current food handlers permit

NOTE: Completion of course in large scale cooking may be substituted for one year of experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Two years' cooking experience in a large scale food service or culinary operation

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:
  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
  • Complete a felony disclosure form prior to employment and submit to a criminal background check.
  • Successfully complete, within mandated timeframes, employee orientation and all other mandatory annual, in service and other required training.
  • Provide physical residential address and home telephone number to the Department of Corrections.
  • Become familiar and comply with all Department policies and procedures and Collective Bargaining Agreements as applicable.
  • Submit to drug testing in accordance with Collective Bargaining Agreement and agency policy.
  • This position may include in a union shop.
