Position Purpose

Works in a team environment under minimal supervision with the design, growth, and maintenance of the Electrical Controls and Automation infrastructure. In addition, this Engineer will be tasked to work in conjunction with their peers for ensuring the stability, integrity, integration, and efficient operation of all in-house Electrical Controls and Automation systems

Key Accountability

30% Planning/Product Life-Cycle Engineering

  • Assist in the planning, scheduling, coordination and leads major, highly visible Capital Expenditure Projects for the Corporate Engineering function. Assist in the development of project plans including project scope, cost/benefit analysis, design basis, success criteria, timelines, resources needs, critical assumptions, commissioning/qualification start-up plans; negotiates equipment and performance service contracts, and resolves issues associated with electrical control systems. Demonstrates strong project management, interpersonal skills, and the ability to direct/motivate cross-functional project teams are essential to this role.
  • Implement Engineering Controls Critical Life-Cycle Management Program for all controls-based manufacturing equipment, software, and hardware.

30% Technical Engineering

  • Proactively identifies opportunities to upgrade current equipment performance so that speed to market, start-up curves, total delivered cost, capital utilization, clean/safe design and product quality are continuously improved. Upholds and maintains Engineering design standards and will be responsible for engineering specifications, documentation, standardization, quality assurance, service delivery methods and cost /value analysis. Ensures compliance with applicable standards, rules and regulations. Manages system and equipment upgrades, expansions and exchanges. Candidate must have strong capabilities in PLC ladder logic programming (Rockwell, Siemens), communication networks (TCP/IP, Ethernet/IP, Profibu) and relational databases (MS SQL, MS Access) to perform these essential duties.
  • Design and Recommend ways to utilize new/existing manufacturing technologies to expand product offerings and capabilities (focus on robotics and automation in the batching, packaging, and material handling aspects of manufacturing)

20% Improvement/Cyber Security

  • Assisting in the advisement to management on the Electrical Controls and Automation portion of the Manufacturing Equipment Strategy. Collaborates and serves as liaison with Manufacturing Operations, Commercialization, and suppliers to install new Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems. Utilizes in-depth knowledge and advanced problem-solving skills.
  • Collaborates with IT Security to design and write specifications for robust manufacturing controls and hardware solutions to guard against the ever-increasing Cyber threats. If a threat materializes, minimize the impact to manufacturing by providing the methodology and systems to recover and be operational in hours vs. days or weeks.

20% Training

  • Attends and participates in capital project meetings, reviews, testing, studies and risk assessments. Communicates project status to all departments with associated involvement in the project.
  • Provide training and support to manufacturing operations
  • Visits other company's manufacturing operations and attends technical trade shows to identify new technological breakthroughs in controls (benchmarking). Incumbent stays abreast of cutting-edge technology, industry news and publications regarding new trends, innovations and standards.
  • Maintains an awareness of Engineering responsiveness to Government Agency compliance, i.e., FDA, OSHA, etc., regarding such items as process validation, micro elimination, and effluent waste treatment.
  • Assist in the implementation of the commissioning, qualification and validation process for all system/equipment modifications and additions.

Qualifications:

  • Preferred Bachelor of Science degree in system, electrical or computer (electronics, software, control systems, power, or related).
  • 3 years of experience in electrical and control product design in the food industry.
  • Understand PID control loops, servo controls, and variable frequency drives.
  • Demonstrate thought leadership and influence beyond regular functions.
  • Utilizes in-depth knowledge and advanced problem-solving skills.
  • Must have excellent leadership skills to provide advice and overall technical direction for projects Demonstrated ability to function effectively in stressful, fast-paced situations, with the personal leadership to influence and positively motivate self. Upholds lives and delivers core values of the company.
  • Experience with D/3 DCS and Modicon PLC ladder logic programming, communication networks e.g. TCP/IP, Ethernet/IP, Profibu and relational databases (e.g. MS SQL, MS Access).
  • Experience with Visual Basic for Applications, PLC ladder logic programming for Rockwell products, Siemens, and associated hardware.
  • Knowledge of machine design, hydraulics, pneumatics, electrical systems, motor controls and aseptic process machine production.
  • Ability to troubleshoot networking and communications issues
  • Demonstrated strong project management and interpersonal skills and the ability to direct/motivate
  • Multi-functional project teams.
  • Demonstrated scale-up and commercialization experience
  • Skills necessary for Hardware and Software integration will be refined on automated equipment used in manufacturing environments.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills required
  • Strong understanding of design patterns and best practices.
  • Strong emphasis on Testing, Quality and Automation
  • Strong ability to decompose a broad level business requirement into technical implementation.
  • Ability to mentor and guide development team members.

Physical Environment:

  • Work may be performed in a temperature-controlled environment.
  • This Job requires Exposure to dust, dirt, noise, loud machinery and vibrations
  • Duties may involve the handling/management of substances designated as hazardous waste by the Environmental Protection Agency. Incumbents assigned such duties must complete an initial training program in hazardous waste management procedures and required annual follow-up training.
  • Incumbent is subject to other hazards such as moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals, high heat, and high places
  • Must sit, stand, or walk for extended periods of time.
  • May spend long periods of time at desk or computer terminal.
  • Will use keyboards, telephone, and other office equipment during the course of normal workday.
  • Stooping, bending, twisting, and reaching may be required in completion of job duties.
  • Workday is fast paced; some evening and weekend work may be required.
