Overview

The Collection Development Librarian is responsible for building, managing, reviewing, evaluating, and promoting collections to support the learning, teaching, and research of campus users. With a $3.6M learning materials budget and with over 80% of our budget spent on electronic resources, evaluating, selecting, and cancelling resources for Auraria Library plays a vital role in ensuring a robust, diverse, and high use collection. This position routinely communicates with stakeholders about the collections including raising awareness of new and existing resources, changes to resource access, and training and educational opportunities on library resources. This position works closely with colleagues across the Library to ensure the collections reflect the needs and interests of users. The librarian prioritizes creating a diverse and inclusive collection and is committed to staying informed about trends, developments, and best practices related to collection development and subject areas they work with. This position will predominantly work with subject areas related to science, technology, engineering and/or medicine, but will work in other subject areas as needed.

Faculty members on the Instructor track have a workload distribution of 90% librarianship and 10% service. As a faculty member, this position participates on Library and campus-wide committees and in CU Denver faculty governance. The position engages in fulfilling the research and educational missions of the Auraria Library and the three institutions on the Auraria Campus – the University of Colorado Denver, the Metropolitan State University of Denver, and the Community College of Denver. This position is in the Library’s Division of Collection Management and Discovery and reports to the Collection Development and Assessment Program Lead.

Located in downtown Denver, Colorado, the Auraria Campus is home to three institutions of higher education – University of Colorado Denver, Metropolitan State University of Denver, and Community College of Denver – both MSU Denver and CCD are Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI), and CU Denver is working toward HSI and Asian American Native American Pacific Islander (AANAPISI) designations. The Auraria Library serves the campus’ of over 35,000 students, the majority of whom are from the first-generation in their family to enroll in higher education. Most of the students are Black, Indigenous, and/or People of Color, and we also serve large populations of veterans, transfer students, adult learners, and other populations that have been historically underserved. Job Duties

Collection Development and Management

  • Oversees collection development in assigned subject area(s) through managing, selecting, collecting, analyzing, promoting, and evaluating information and research resources in multiple formats, including books, ebooks, journals, databases, and streaming media.
  • Ensures collections support learning, teaching, and research needs by monitoring curricular offerings and changes and staying informed of campus’ research initiatives.
  • Collaboratively works and develops projects, processes, and tools to provide access to a diversity of voices and perspectives across Library collections.
  • Effectively manages the funds of collection areas and is a good steward of those funds.
  • Uses tools and software to support collection management to develop and assess collections. These may include but are not limited to YBP-GOBI Library Solutions, Sierra, EBSCONet, ExLibris Serial Solutions, MPS ScholarlyStats, and GoldRush.
  • Reviews and responds to collection requests from students, faculty, instructors, and staff.
  • Contributes to, communicates about, and implements the Library’s collection development policies.
  • Keeps abreast of collection development and management best practices and shares and applies new knowledge, including through recommendations for improvements.
  • Monitors the emergence of relevant resources by communicating with publishers, vendors, and other distributors.
  • Stays abreast of new resources overall in subject areas.
  • Participates in the check and balance system by providing justification for cancellation, renewal or new subscription of resources to relevant stakeholders including internal and external library users.
  • Participates in the life cycle of collection activities by collaborating with acquisitions, discovery and metadata, ILL, and other teams, units, and departments to accomplish goals.

Collections Assessment

  • Assists in gathering and coordinating information needed for academic program reviews, accreditation, and reports to library and higher education agencies.
  • Participates in the multi-faceted assessment of Library resources (books, serials, databases, journals, newspapers).
  • Manages weeding projects and processes in assigned subject area(s).
  • Organizes trials including gathering feedback and reviewing comparisons of the resource.

Other

  • Delivers and tracks research help services across a large, complex, and rapidly changing information landscape. This includes providing support at the Ask Us Desk, conducting research consultations in-person or online, and/or assisting users with research questions via virtual services (IM, email, etc.).
  • Other duties as assigned.

Leadership and Service

  • Participates on Library and campus-wide committees and CU Denver faculty governance.

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $60,000 to $65,000

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

  • Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library school/program or in an appropriately related field from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor or master’s degree in a science, technology, engineering, or medical / health related field OR minimum of two years’ experience working with science, technology, engineering, and/or medical / health students, faculty, and staff in an academic library.
  • One or more years’ experience participating in collection development or management in an academic library.
