Job Summary / Purpose

The Coder assigns ICD-10, CPT and HCPCS codes to diseases, conditions and procedures for all types of patients. This role is a key player in the revenue cycle with responsibilities of charge review, accurate code and modifier assignment, preauthorization of services and denial management. The Coder also manages data including statistical reporting, quality data abstraction, extraction of data from electronic record system and data analytics. Duties also include release of protected health information for a variety of requestors.

Essential Key Job Responsibilities

• Assigns ICD-10, CPT and HCPCS codes on all patient records utilizing current coding guidelines and standards. (Inpatient, outpatient, emergency department, nursing home, home care/hospice)

• Abstracts data from patient records per guidelines and standards.

• Reviews and assigns charges as requested for specific areas (Emergency department and hospitalist professional fees, infusion therapy charges, etc.).

• Prepares accounts for billing with correct modifier assignment and claim information.

• Assists billing department with denial management.

• Obtains preauthorization for services in specific areas.

• Releases protected health information to a variety of requestors.

• Extracts data from the electronic record system for reporting purposes including quality measures, registries and statistical reports.

Required Education and Experience: Coder Education program, RHIT or RHIA. Experience is preferred

Required Licensure and Certification: Certifications preferred (CCS, CCA, RHIT, or RHIA)
