Position Description
Responsible for assisting the providers in running on schedule, assisting providers with all procedures and patient care, providing a caring, friendly, helpful and professional atmosphere. Epic is the electronic medical record of Story County Medical Center (Story Medical). It is expected Epic will be used to its full capability.

  • Maintains confidentiality of all hospital and departmental matters.
  • Performs patient care within the guidelines of hospital/clinic policies and procedures and scope of practice.
  • Apply background knowledge of pathophysiology of disease and nursing skill techniques in initial encounter with patients, recognizing and reporting to the provider any potentially emergency and/or critical symptoms.
  • Recognizes and provides appropriate nursing intervention in emergency situations.
  • Accurately prepares and administers prescribed medications according to hospital/clinic procedures and scope of practice.
  • Completes appropriate documentation in the patient’s electronic medical record.
  • Visually assesses and provides patient safety, according to identified needs.
  • Operates special equipment correctly after receiving instruction.
  • Delivers and documents patient teaching and verifies that the patient and/or significant other person is receptive and understands the information.
  • Supports and abides by all hospital, departmental and safety policies and procedures.
  • Acts in a professional manner reflecting the mission, philosophy and values of Story Medical.
  • Utilizes interpersonal skills to establish and maintain healthy relationships with healthcare providers, co-workers, patients and families.
  • Acknowledge patient’s rights and confidentiality issues.
  • Takes patients to exam rooms, charts vitals, notes chief complaint and other required charting activity.
  • Performs venipuncture, gives allergy and other injections.
  • Maintains medication and immunization records.
  • Prepare and maintain examination and treatment areas.
  • Prepares patient for examination, procedures, treatments and assists provider as needed.
  • Coordinates on-going patient flow through the clinic process ensuring efficient and effective continuity, to include:
  • Scheduling clinic appointments, specialist appointments etc. keeping in mind the patient’s insurance guidelines and requirements.
  • Notes current patient information and changes, makes notification to the “front office staff” regarding updating demographic, insurance and other patient information.
  • Phone triage with patient, calling prescriptions, coordination of care, etc.
  • Follows prescribed procedure for the organization and maintenance of the medical record and is able to retrieve requested documents, results, etc.
  • Routes transcription, refill requests and other patient information to the provider.
  • Utilizes professional and tactful communication skills to enhance the image of Story Medical.
  • Attends continuing education programs to improve performance and maintain licensure.

Marginal Duties:*

  • Demonstrates organizational skills and good public relations.
  • Identifies own educational needs and requirements, monitoring continuing educational units (CEUs).
  • Attends in-services offered by the hospital and monthly staff meetings, whenever possible.
  • Performs duties assigned by the Department Director, the Provider(s), the Chief Financial Officer and/or the Chief Nursing Officer.
  • Utilizes a computer terminal.
  • Investigates and studies new trends and developments in nursing practice.
  • Reports problems or concerns to the Department Director on a timely basis.
  • It is the employee’s responsibility to maintain current licensure and certification.

Position Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program.
  • Current certification in Medical Assisting.
  • BCLS certified within 60 days of employment.
  • Mandatory Reporter Certification within 90 days of hire.
