Job Overview


The Clinical Scientist is responsible for the development of new assays, tests and kits. Works closely with laboratory leaders and consults with clinical and technical experts to identify unmet needs for new tests and improved methodology.

Clinical Molecular Director (Geneticist), Precision Diagnostics Laboratory

Nature of Work
Children’s Hospital Colorado is recruiting a full-time PhD and/or MD molecular geneticist for the Precision Diagnostics Laboratory (PDL). The candidate should be ABMGG board-certified or board-eligible in Clinical Molecular Genetics and Genomics or Laboratory Genetics and Genomics. This position is primarily aimed at supporting the clinical activities of the lab, as related to constitutional testing, interpretation and reporting, and clinical support for assay development.

Examples of Work Performed

  • Provide clinical expertise in interpretation of molecular genetics laboratory test results with primary responsibility for signing out interpretative reports.
  • Work with variant analysis team to support robust and timely results review.
  • Give regular feedback regarding workflows to support continuous improvement.
  • Serve as a clinical consultant during the validation of new assays, with focus on ensuring the assay serves the anticipated clinical needs, development of assay content, and curation of data to support variant interpretation.
  • Serve as a resource for clinical colleagues regarding questions about test results and testing capabilities and establish collaborative relationships with clinical teams.
  • Participate in variant review conferences with clinical teams.
  • Support laboratory quality through participation in proficiency testing and investigations of quality issues as requested by the operational team.
  • Play an active role in the ABMGG Laboratory Genetics and Genomics program and the Molecular Genetic Pathology fellow education through didactics, teaching during case review, mentorship for research projects, etc.
  • Contribute to continuing education for technical staff.
  • Participate in scholarly activity through case reports/series, laboratory focused projects, collaboration with clinical colleagues, etc.

Competencies

  • Experience with interpretation and results reporting for large NGS panels, ideally whole exome sequencing.
  • Broad knowledge of genetic variant databases and their utility.
  • Understanding of interpretation and reporting workflows.
  • Basic knowledge of NGS wet-bench techniques, data quality, and bioinformatics tools.
  • Understanding of laboratory quality measures and familiarity with CAP and CLIA regulations.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative team environment with clinical, scientific, and operational teams.
  • Desire to join a dynamic and growing laboratory.

Additional Information


Department: Precision Diagnostic PDX Lab
Hours per week: 40, eligible for benefits
Shift: Monday - Friday with ability to support urgent/critical case sign out outside of business hours as needed.

The hiring range for this position is: $125,000 - $154,000

Qualifications

  • EDUCATION – PhD in a chemical, physical, biological or directly related science.
  • EXPERIENCE – Completion of a formal fellowship training program or 3 years of relevant laboratory experience at the PhD level.
    • Previous experience with EPIC, preferred
  • CERTIFICATION(S) - Board Certification preferred

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Provides technical expertise to programs, processes, and best practices. Assists in the training of technical staff during and after the implementation of new assays.
  • Analyzes raw data and assists in preparation of reports for final review and medical director approval.
  • Reviews test results and interprets laboratory test reports, as appropriate.
  • May act as a variant analyst for classification of observed variants or unusual or unexpected results. Organizes, coordinates, and may perform activities for new assay development; developing assays as required by the laboratory and ensures that assays are developed in good laboratory practice, are consistent with regulatory requirements and relevant DPLM policies and procedures.
  • Works on highly complex or controversial projects; performs project management activities.
  • Partners with operational counterpart to establish a culture of openness, continuous quality improvement and staff engagement.
  • Participates in budget process, cost analysis of new or ongoing clinical testing, and makes recommendations to improve testing efficiency, reagents and supply chain costs.
  • Participates in strategic planning process, annual goals, and performance metrics for laboratory; participates in the implementation of plans for aligning function(s) to operational vision and strategy
  • Participates in leadership activities for the operation, contributing to the achievement of goals and objectives; evaluates functional performance. Participates in identifying and implementing process improvements including the documentation of performance and quality statistics.
  • Knowledgeable of and supports federal, state, and local regulatory compliance for functional area(s).
  • Regularly assesses the market need for testing and assures that new test methods meet the needs of patients. Meets with key stakeholder to discuss potential new market areas.
  • Supports customer service standards established by leaders.
  • Supports collaborations with potential partners to enhance nonpatient revenue.
  • Supports potential clinical research protocols and potential industry sponsored clinical studies.
  • Presents scientific and educational seminars to staff and colleagues. Serves as an interface between medical staff and technical staff.

Salary Information

Annual Salary Range (Based on 40 hours worked per week): $102,987.24 to $154,480.87
Hourly Salary Range: $49.51 to $74.27
