DESCRIPTION
UC San Diego Health has been caring for the community for more than 50 years. The system is one of five academic medical centers within the 10-campus University of California system, collectively known as UC Health. These medical centers comprise the fourth largest health care delivery system in California, and train nearly 50% of the state's medical students and medical residents. UC San Diego Health has a three part mission of clinical, research and teaching excellence. The system comprises of three hospitals operating under one license which include UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest with 390 beds, Jacobs Medical Center with 364 beds, and Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center with 54 beds. There are also numerous ambulatory and specialty clinics located throughout the county to deliver care to the entire region.
UC San Diego Health seeks an innovative, collaborative and strategic marketing executive to serve as the organization's next Chief Marketing and Communications Officer (CMCO). Based in San Diego, CA, the CMCO will lead the health system's marketing and communications strategies to advance and elevate UC San Diego Health's brand and consumer loyalty locally, regionally, and nationally.
The CMCO will report directly to Patty Maysent, Chief Executive Officer of UC San Diego Health, and will serve as a member of the Health System Executive Team. In addition, the CMCO will report to the Chief Communications and Marketing Officer of UC San Diego for coordination, consistency with the brand, and participation in key campus committees as assigned. The CMCO will ensure that all activities related to UC San Diego Health are consistent with the strategic direction of the UC San Diego campus. As a member of the Health System Executive Team, the CMCO will provide overall strategic oversight for marketing and communications strategies and programs that drive growth, customer acquisitions and retentions, and articulate a compelling story that further elevates UC San Diego Health's brand and reputation as a national model for care to best position UC San Diego Health within its competitive market. The CMCO will be responsible for leading the strategic execution of marketing, communications, public relations and digital media to optimize UC San Diego Health's relationships with the entire range of constituents: patients, staff, physicians, community and civic leaders, university leadership and other key influencers. This executive will provide support as a key, designated contact for the press and should be adept at handling a variety of issues with the media and community.
The successful candidate will have a minimum of ten years marketing, communications, advertising, and public relations experience. The CMCO will be a highly creative, strategic leader with a contemporary, grounded approach to strategic communications, marketing, digital media, and data management. The CMCO will be politically savvy, highly organized, and have a strong track record of effectively managing and mentoring staff. This executive will be driven by results, excellence and service to others. The CMCO will have a proven ability to adapt to changing priorities and incorporate the input of other leaders and constituencies, including physicians, staff, and other community members and leaders. The CMCO will have superior communication skills with a proven ability to develop strong relationships, accompanied by the credibility and knowledge base to foster collaboration across the system and university.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's Degree in marketing, communications, public relations, advertising or other closely related field. Advanced degree in a relevant field is preferred.
Minimum ten years of marketing, communications, and public relations experience with progressively increasing responsibility preferably in a healthcare setting. Significant experience with integrated marketing and communications in a complex organization, ideally in a healthcare system or related industries.
Experience leading strategy in a healthcare system which includes academic and/or community hospitals in a highly competitive market.
Track record of identifying opportunities and translating and operationalizing strategy into implementation and execution. Proven effectiveness in developing and implementing strategic, business plans with measurable results that enhance the organization’s overall productivity, effectiveness, and market share.
Demonstrated ability in setting a corporate communications vision and strategy that is directly linked to the overall strategic goals of the organization and its entities.
Proven success in coordinating and integrating institutional image and communications activities within a highly complex organizational structure. Comfortable working closely with senior executives and providing them with appropriate communications advice and counsel.
A performance history of expanding the reach and value of an institution's brand at local, regional, and national levels, as well as demonstrated experience with modern communications program development and optimizing digital strategies.
Innovative and future-focused, yet analytical and metrics-driven, with a keen eye for detail and accuracy.
Ability to identify and effectively utilize the latest technologies for communication, data gathering and reporting activities.
Exceptional interpersonal skills with demonstrated leadership and teamwork abilities, specifically an ability to relate to employees at all levels of the organization.
Superior communication skills, which incorporate effective listening, written, oral and presentation skills; a communication style that is open, proactive, consistent and fosters trust, credibility and understanding.
A track record of exceptional relationship building; a demonstrated ability and desire to interact with community and media representatives to establish credibility and build stronger ties.
Highly organized and disciplined with a strong work ethic and sense of urgency. Demonstrates self-initiative and self-confidence, is highly intelligent, a quick study, and is able to accept delegated responsibilities and initiate change. Deadline driven and results/goal oriented.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $125,600 - $314,400 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $60.15 - $150.57
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
Job offer is contingent on successful engagement in the UC COVID-19 Vaccination program (fully vaccinated with documented proof or approved exception/deferral).
