Job description
This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (a maximum of 20 hours per week) Store Assistant position for the Department of Chemistry at Oregon State University (OSU).

The Chemistry Department Student Worker reports to the Chemistry Facilities & Operations Manager, assisting in the operation of the Chemistry Department Store (ChemStores) and other Chemistry Department’s needs within both Chemistry Buildings, Gilbert Hall and Linus Pauling Science Center (LPSC).
Position Duties
The primary job in this position will be in the ChemStores. In that role, the employee is responsible for assisting customers, preserving store appearance, maintaining storerooms, validating current inventory stock, delivering departmental orders, assisting in the receiving and stocking of incoming shipment, supporting the annual Chem Store Inventory (during Spring Break), and other store tasks as directed by their supervisor.

Standard ChemStores duties include:
  • Improving the customers’ buying experience
  • Assisting customers both in person and on the telephone
  • Helping customers locate products in the store and retrieving chemicals and supplies from the auxiliary storage locations: main floor, vault, chem room, cylinder room, and basement
  • Dispensing bulk chemicals into smaller containers
  • Assist customers in using the checkout computers
  • Transporting materials and chemicals from Gilbert to LPSC
  • Random inventory checks (stock counts, location labeling, proper SKU’s, etc.)
  • Communicating any issues with classified staff store
  • Appearance: maintain the cleanliness of the store (sweep, mop, dust, etc.), face products on shelves, restock products from secondary storage locations
  • Affix barcode labels or ensure product tags are available at the location(s)
  • Breaking down and disposing of cardboard boxes
  • Restocking of shelves with merchandise
  • Maintain or create displays with signage to better advertise and assist customers in their shopping experience


Chemistry Department Support. This position will also support the Chemistry Department in various functions including:
  • Maintaining Chemistry’s buildings and grounds. Building support functions include, but not limited to:
    • Assisting in minor building repairs
    • Cleanup and prevention of water spills/flooding
    • Sustaining exterior building grounds and landscaping
    • Maintaining general public areas for neatness and cleanliness
    • Assist in preparing offices, labs, and other spaces for new and current faculty and space utilization by: cleaning out building spaces, moving furniture, painting walls and ceilings, cleaning carpets
  • Supporting Chemistry departmental events. Chemistry departmental events include, but not limited to:
    • Setup for department and university events
    • Assist in running the events
    • Breakdown after the event
    • Store equipment and unused supplies
    • There may be other tasks, which are necessary to Chemistry or university functions, in which the supervisor will assign to the student worker

  • This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Part-Time (6+ credit hours) or full-time student at OSU or dual enrolled at OSU/LBCC
  • Science background (Chemistry preferred), or a business background: Marketing, Interior Design, Graphic Arts, Business Management, Merchandising Management, Business & Entrepreneurship
  • Available throughout the day, specifically mornings
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs
  • Available to work at least part time during terms breaks (winter and summer) Available to work at least part time during summer term
