Office of the Sergeant at Arms
Job Summary:
The Division of Protocol and Chamber Operations supports protocol and special events, access into the House Chamber and galleries, and access into the Capitol for official business visitors. Chamber Security staff work as part of the team who controls access onto the House Floor during all sessions of the House of Representatives. Chamber Security staff are required to work the House schedule, with possible irregular hours and weekend work. Chamber Security Staff report to the Deputy Assistant Sergeant at Arms for Chamber Security.
Duties Include:
1.Serve as the first point of contact for access to the House Floor for Members and staff.
2.Assist Members on the Floor with requests from staff and the press.
3.Bring authenticated bills and other official documents into the Chamber.
4.Assist with the coordination of the evacuation of the House Chamber and any shelter-in place emergency events.
5.Enforce decorum rules in the Hall of the House.
6.Support House Recovery Operations structure.
7.Assist with special events as needed.
8.Perform other official duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Work Experience and Education:
Must be a current Federal employee with a bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent work experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Must be tactful and courteous in dealing with Members of Congress, Congressional staff and the public; ability to work all posts for long hours, evening and weekend hours when needed; ability to develop a working knowledge of the rules and decorum for the House Floor; must be physically able to stand for long periods of time. Must be able to successfully pass a criminal history records check.
Work Schedule:
Chamber Security staff are Belo-contract employees and must be available to work whenever the House is in session. This can include irregular work hours and possible late night and weekend work as well. Employees in this position are not eligible to accrue annual leave.
