Job Summary

  • The Pharmacy Technician assists the pharmacist in preparing and dispensing medications to patients and patient care areas. Identifies, prepares, packages, labels and delivers medications, including sterile products, under the supervision of a pharmacist.

Education

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (Required)
  • Combination of relevant education and experience may be considered in lieu of degree.

Experience

  • General Experience in an accredited hospital pharmacy technician training program or equivalent combination of education and experience (Preferred)

Licenses/Certification

  • CPhT: Certified Pharmacy Technician (Required)

General Responsibilities

  • Complies with all Temple University Health System policies and procedures, and all applicable accreditation standards, laws and regulations, including those regarding patient confidentiality such as, but not limited to, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, P. L. 104-191 ('HIPAA') and the rules and regulations implemented hereunder.

Staff Training

  • Assists in training new employees; i.e., Pharmacy Technicians, Pharmacy Interns, Pharmacy Students and Pharmacy Residents.

Documentation

  • Creates and maintains written and electronic documents.
  • Documents all procedures and activities timely, accurately, and legibly.
  • Follows all documentation standards according to department policy and procedures.

Medication Distribution Maintenance

  • Delivers and assures security of all medications including controlled substances.
  • Transports medications, drug-delivery devices and other pharmacy equipment from the Pharmacy to Nursing units and clinics.
  • Fills Pyxis Med Stations and troubleshoots mechanical failures.
  • Removes unused and expired medications and returns them to the Pharmacy.
  • Performs monthly patient care area drug storage inspections.
  • Maintains, collects and documents quality assurance data such as refrigerator temperature and hood cleaning.

Medication Preparation

  • Prepares medications and supplies for dispensing, including chemotherapeutic agents, using aseptic techniques when preparing sterile products.
  • Compounds ointments, creams, oral solutions and other medications.
  • Compounds total parenteral nutrition solutions. Compounds small and large volume intravenous mixtures.
  • Packages and prepares drugs being used in clinical investigations.
  • Responds in a timely manner to meet the standards established for all STAT medication requests.
  • Completes specific work assignments as scheduled including supporting other pharmacy staff in the assigned area to complete mutual workload during the shift.
  • Retrieves and reviews inventory and returned medications, assessing expiration date, product integrity and labeling appropriateness prior to placing in stock.
  • Prepares inventories, order drugs and supplies from the Storeroom, receives drugs and stocks shelves in various Pharmacy locations, including restocking Code Cart trays.

Supply/Maintenance of Pharmacy Equipment

  • Provides medications and supplies to the various automated dispensing equipment, utilizes medication packaging machines and monitors equipment required for medication dispensing for continued safe functioning. Troubleshoots and maintains these devices.
  • Utilizes and maintains the medication packaging equipment in the pharmacy according to established policies and procedures.
  • Replaces stock and supplies to the automated dispensing machines throughout the institution according to established policies and procedures, monitoring stock for expiration date, integrity and labeling appropriateness.
  • Monitors equipment used in medication dispensing for continued safe and consistent functioning. Examples include but are not limited to printers, packaging machines, automated inventory equipment and IV admixture machines.
  • Provides first line troubleshooting of equipment according to established policies and procedures.
