DEPARTMENT: Clinical/Business Office – Procedure Room/Medical Records

SUMMARY:

The medical assistant’s primary function is to provide direct assistance to the proceduralist during pain management procedures, and to the PreOp/PACU nursing staff. The medical assistant also assists the business office with medical records management. The position is under the overall supervision of the Administrator/Director of Nursing and works under the direct supervision of a registered nurse. The position responsibilities deal mainly with assisting the nursing staff and proceduralists in the care of patients.

I. PROCEDURE ROOM DUTIES

A. Provides safe care to the patient undergoing pain management procedures by being able to effectively assist the procedure room staff and providers during pain management procedures. Provides safe care to patients preoperatively and postoperatively under the supervision of a registered nurse.

B. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles and practices of aseptic technique. Maintains sterile technique when setting up for procedures.

C. Effectively communicates with all members of the care team. Communicates to the registered nurse and the proceduralist, any problems that arise during the procedure.

D. Restocks procedure room supplies to assure all supplies are readily accessible during a procedure.

E. Safely prepares and administers medications under the supervision of the nurse and/or provider.

F. Assists with patient positioning.

G. Performs pre-procedure skin preparation using aseptic technique.

H. Applies sterile dressings.

I. Demonstrates knowledge of equipment, instruments, supplies, and procedures.

J. Assists with the cleaning of the procedure room before and after procedures and with room turnover.

II. PREOP/PACU DUTIES

A. Obtains and documents vital signs.

B. Applies telemetry/EKG leads.

C. Phlebotomy/IV access if requested.

D. Provide fluid and nutrition post-operatively.

E. Assist patients with activities such as out of bed, out of chair, to the toilet, and with dressing back into their clothes prior to discharge.

F. Transports patients by walking or wheelchair upon discharge.

G. Review and restock unit fluids and nutrition.

III. MEDICAL RECORDS

A. Thin charts and scan charts.

B. Manage charts that are send to offsite storage and request charts from storage when needed.

C. Verify nursing and provider signatures in charts when requested.

IV. OTHER

A. Participates in orientation of new staff and helps to cross-train others in their own area of expertise.

B. Contributes to the Quality Improvement Program as necessary. Pull charts and data to support Quality Improvement studies as requested.

C. Participates in team meetings.

D. Performs other duties as needed to ensure the safety and comfort of all patients as well as the efficient operation of the facility.

VI. CONTACT WITH OTHERS

1. Internal: Staff in clinical operations, business office, and contract personnel.

2. External: Physicians, Allied Health Professionals, patients, Physicians’ office staff, representatives of medical industry, consultants, and professional peers.

VII. POSITION CHARACTERISTICS

It is necessary to perform some overtime beyond regularly scheduled work hours to provide patient care. Additionally, some on-call duty may be required. Because of the nature of procedures in the procedure room and patient care issues, this job can be stressful and hectic.

VIII. POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Physical and mental - walking, standing, pushing, pulling, required to move patients. Potential exists for exposure to blood and body fluids as well as other hazardous materials. Personal protective equipment should be utilized as needed. Must have a thorough knowledge of operating room technique, possess strong organizational skills and flexibility, present good communication skills, have the ability to assess priorities, present a professional image, and be able to handle periods of stress.

IX. POSITION SPECIFICATIONS

Must know and be able to carry out aseptic technique. Must be able to anticipate proceduralist’s needs and act accordingly. Must have a high degree of judgment and initiative, be able to follow instructions carefully, and be able to act in an efficient, effective, and rational manner in emergencies. Must have the ability to interact with other members of the surgical team in a cooperative and supportive manner. Must be aware of the need for discretion and ethical judgment. Must be able to get along with others. Must maintain BLS.
