Job description
for Equity-focused Substance Use Initiative
Nature of Work
The University of Missouri-St. Louis, in collaboration with The T, Family Care Health Center, and several community-based organizations in the St. Louis area, established a community-academic collaboration entitled CENTER (Community Engagement, Trauma, Equity & Renewal; www.CENTERstl.org) for People Who Use Drugs in 2021. The CENTER Initiative is now looking for a Community Partnership and Programming Specialist to help support its mission, and build upon its existing community-based partnerships and activities.
The mission of the CENTER Initiative is to reduce overdose, confront the impact of trauma, and invest in the long-term wellbeing of Black people most impacted by addiction, drug use, and overdose in St. Louis. Our current priorities are to 1) change the narrative around drug use and overdose to increase the urgency of the crisis for Black people in St. Louis while appreciating and celebrating the many paths to recovery, 2) promote safer drug use through expanded harm reduction education and supply distribution, and 3) increase substance use service options that both add to services that already exist and lead to the growth of new, innovative models that promote healing care and social support.
The Community Partnership and Programming Specialist will focus on building and supporting the CENTER Community Advisory Board, navigating partner communications and collaborations, and coordinating team meetings and gatherings. This role requires significant flexibility in one’s day-to-day roles and responsibilities because our approach to achieving project goals will change in response to community feedback and needs. Candidates should be prepared to work with a diverse team that includes health care providers, researchers, professional advocates, people who use drugs, and community activists and organizers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage the operations of the CENTER Community Advisory Board (CAB), including but not limited to member support and communication (i.e., serving as the primary liaison for the 9-10 existing community consultants), monthly meeting planning, CAB project management and evaluation, CAB marketing and recruitment, website maintenance, and supporting the development of a long-term strategic vision for CAB sustainability.
  • Represent and promote CENTER in the community by building community awareness at tabling events, community meetings, listening sessions, and other engagements.
  • Amplify the current overdose crisis for Black people in St. Louis by designing and managing a Public Relations/Media strategy with traditional and non-traditional news sources
  • Organize and attend project and subgroup team meetings; serve as a point of contact for project involvement and correspondence. Strengthen relationships with project partners through regular meetings
  • Support education and training activities by assisting with promoting training events, participant and vendor communications, and event logistics.
  • Provide support for ongoing research activities by assisting with participant recruitment and communication.
  • Conduct regional travel as-needed to attend community meetings, focus groups, and other events. Potential for optional out-of-state travel to occasional conferences.
Remote Work/Physical Requirements: Many job duties can and will be done remotely. At this time, the Addiction Science team strongly encourages staff members to work in person on the UMSL campus at least two days per week. In-person attendance at community meetings and events (at least 1-2 per month) is expected. This may change in the future.
Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States. The University will not sponsor applicants for this position for employment visas.
