  • POSITION PURPOSE

Cleans all contaminated instruments and materials from Main OR, ASF, Labor and Delivery, Cath Lab, Hemodialysis and Emergency Room. Loads and operates washers. Assembles instrument trays and operates autoclaves meeting quality standards. Circulates case carts after receiving preference cards from surgery sites. Responds to requests for unexpected needs and emergency items 24 hrs a day 7 days a week.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Cleans contaminated instruments and trays using proper cleaning techniques that include knowledge of manufactures recommendations for care and handling. Uses proper attire and safety standards. Understands OSHA guidelines regarding body substance isolation. May clean and assemble vendor instrument sets/specialty instrument sets and maintain relationships with vendors. Reprocesses vendor/specialty instrument sets and trays using advanced techniques. Operates complex washers utilizing proper quality and safety standards. Understands need for hand washing of micro instruments and electronic devices. Assembles and labels instruments for sterilization. Understands the differences between instruments and completes sets with minimal errors. Able to assemble sets from multiple services such as orthopedic, neuro, cardiothoracic, general surgery, ENT, urology, gyn, and plastic surgery. Autoclaves items based on manufacture recommendations. Understand quality parameters for autoclave. Understands the operation of steam and llll sterilizers. Review sterilizer output before releasing items for storage or use. Performs quality controls as required by regulatory bodies. Complete assembly of case carts with in time frames established with minimal errors. Monitor, assess needs and maintain department inventory. Acts as a teacher of his own job duties and responsibilities in staff orientation and development. Maintains the work area and hospital facilities and equipment to reduce potential injury to employees. Observes hospital/department/work unit policies, procedures, rules and standards. Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner. Helps to identify problems, offers solutions and participates in their resolution. Demonstrates good customer/supplier relations and communicates with OR staff and physicians. Completes mandatory in-service requirements. Behaves in accordance with SJMH values of service, justice, mercy, human dignity and preferential option for the poor. Performs routine housekeeping chores, including but not limited to trash, soiled linen disposal, damp dusting, wiping 'down cupboard/cart shelving, sterilizer/washer interiors/exteriors/countertops and work surfaces. Performs related duties as required.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE

  • Requires minimum of High School Diploma or GED.
  • Successful completion of an accredited Central Sterile Reprocessing program or six to twelve months of relevant experience desired.
  • Certification in Sterile Reprocessing desired. If non-certified, must obtain certification within one year from date of hire.

  • Ability to teach/precept team members in specialized instrumentation reprocessing.
  • Ability to maintain productivity standards established by the department for specialized instrumentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and reprioritize duties based on changes in volume.
  • Ability to use effective interpersonal communication skills to establish and maintain relationships with vendors, customers and peers.
