Job Summary
The University of Utah is seeking qualified applicants for a Career Coach. The ideal candidate will be comfortable with change in a fast-moving environment, have a strong customer service orientation, a desire to succeed in placement metrics, and a high level of professionalism.
  • Educates, guides, and prepares students to transition from an academic environment to employment.
  • Proactively manages a portfolio of students and coordinates activities between students, employers, and U of U departments.

Responsibilities
Coaches must solve complex problems which relate to counseling individual students who come from a wide variety of backgrounds. These individuals are making life-changing choices. The resolution comes in the form of understanding and utilizing available resources to research options and provide individualized solutions. Coaches are involved in hiring and personnel decisions. Each coach must have knowledge of employment laws and ethical standards for hiring and recruiting. Decisions are based on the adopted standards of the National Association of Colleges and Employers. Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description. Incumbents in this position are expected to be familiar with the department’s policies and procedures and have a working knowledge of university and department organizations and procedures to answer and assist staff and visitors. Incumbents are also expected to demonstrate sensitivity to others’ needs.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalency (2 years related work experience may be substituted for 1 year of education).
Four to six years of progressively more responsible management experience. Background knowledge of hiring department’s area of specialization in order to analyze, plan and draw conclusions for recommendations to superiors. Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively monitor and develop subordinates and to ensure the smooth operation of department. Master’s degree in a related area may be preferred.

Preferences
5+ years of professional work experience in the private sector, working in one or more fields that employ business graduates.
Exposure to coaching and mentoring students in business careers.
Ability to troubleshoot the root cause of and resolve complex issues individually and through teamwork.
Curious and flexible, with an excellent work ethic. Knowledge and exposure to CRMs like Salesforce are preferred.
Experience using Excel, cleaning data, analyzing, and preparing recommendations and reports.
Ability to be flexible and adaptable as requests for help change.
