Purpose
To perform custodial maintenance tasks at the Marine Science Institute. Be a positive representative for Building Services. Shift hours: 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Overtime may be required with little or no advance notice. Hiring decision contingent upon applicant clearing a background check and receiving an acceptable driver's rating. Applications reviewed online.
Responsibilities
- Assist in preparing short-term housing and dormitories for incoming visitors.
- Clean, sweep, mop, dust, and scrub tile work, floors, stairways, hallways, restrooms, offices, classrooms, laboratories, and building lobby. Mop, strip and wax floors. Empty Wastebaskets and trash cans regularly.
- Clean and replenish supplies in restrooms; wash windows, clean, dust and polish furniture and other office equipment.
- Participate in the preparation of auditorium and other areas for meetings, public programs and other student and faculty functions. Assist in setting up for receptions, meetings, and banquets and clean-up and removal of set-ups.
- Report any obvious repairs needed to the building or institutional equipment.
- Other related functions as assigned. May be asked to get Food Handler’s Permit and a TAVC card to assist with cafeteria duties if needed. Some overtime required. This position is considered essential during emergency situations.
Required Qualifications
- Six months experience in any of the following fields: custodial, hospitality, environmental services, warehouse, production or facilities maintenance.
- Experience following basic work instructions. Stable work history.
- Strong attendance record. Ability to follow verbal instructions.
- Ability to walk 3 - 5 miles daily.
- Basic reading skills in order to understand work orders, product labels, and other written job materials.
- Must have a reliable means of communication and method for transportation to and from work
Preferred Qualifications
- High school, GED or higher.
- More than six months experience in any of the following fields: custodial, hospitality, environmental services, warehouse, production or facilities maintenance.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate with supervisors and peer group in a timely, respectful, and effective manner.
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to be an effective team member.
- Well-developed interpersonal communication and customer service skills.
- Experience in a busy environment working around clients.
- Excellent initiative, attention to detail, and ability to change tasks quickly and willingly according to changing needs and instructions.
- Experience using commercial custodial equipment.
Driving Required
This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).
