DESCRIPTION
Under supervision, incumbent will work as a recruiter for a genetics study of autism funded by the Simons Foundation that involves on-line consenting and the collection of saliva from parents and children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). UCSD is one of >20 institutions working together to generate a large cohort of individuals with ASD so that genetic findings can one-day translate into improved treatments and outcomes for affected individuals. Primary responsibilities involve subject coordination and recruitment, saliva collection, answering phone calls from the community, scheduling patients, public speaking, event coordination, and identification and outreach of potential research subjects through community partners. The Autism Recruiter will also develop a team consisting of undergraduate students, both paid and volunteer, to achieve the study’s goals and will work with his/her team to leverage social media towards this end.
The Autism Recruiter will closely monitor subject enrollment via web-based tracking tools, and will meet with the PI weekly to discuss program progress and to generate new ideas to further enhance success. Additionally, ancillary responsibilities include knowledge and ability in UC business affairs, such as purchasing, web design, and preparation of documents for grant applications and manuscripts, and informing UCSD’s IRB of any protocol changes. The Autism Recruiter will also be expected to be knowledgeable regarding HIPAA guidelines and the importance of protecting patient confidentiality and data. Incumbent will be responsible for creating detailed periodic progress reports to the funding agency to include recruitment strategies, subject intake data and compliance rates. Incumbent will assist the PI to coordinate and provide work direction for lab assistants and students and further develop recruitment and subject tracking procedures with the PI.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Theoretical knowledge of Psychology, Human Development, Biology, Public Health, Communication or related field preferred as typically attained by a bachelor’s degree and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Working knowledge of study procedures, such DNA sample collection via saliva samples, in order to explain these procedures to parents, pediatricians and the public.
Demonstrated attention to detail and excellent listening and observation skills.
Experience interacting in a professional manner with children and families of children with special needs (i.e. autism).
Solid computer skills using MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint, email systems, and a variety of web-based programs. Ability to adapt to both PC and Macintosh platforms. Ability to gather, analyze, enter accurate data and to create and maintain databases, perform standard computer tasks, learn new programs/applications with minimal direction. Ability to instruct others on system/database use.
Effective interpersonal skills with strong, ability to communicate orally and in writing. Possess skills of tact, poise, diplomacy, confidentiality and flexibility. Ability and willingness to work independently and/or in a team framework in conjunction with principles of community and with a diverse population of staff, faculty, industry and others. Ability to effectively contribute to discussions regarding procedures and goals of unit.
Strong verbal, written, and electronic communication skills that facilitate professional, effective, and courteous interaction with a diverse population. Ability to effectively compose, edit and proofread written materials using clear and concise expression, proper grammar, style, and punctuation
Excellent time management and strong organizational and multi-tasking skills. Ability to establish priorities, meet multiple and frequently changing deadlines with flexibility, process a high volume of work while under pressure, and maintain a high level of accuracy.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
- Must have access to reliable transportation and have a valid CA driver's license and acceptable driving record. Willing to drive to relevant locations throughout the greater San Diego region as part of recruitment efforts.
- Strong public-speaking and clinical skills a plus.
- Must enjoy talking with people and interacting with families that have a special needs child.
Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $51,949 - $61,972 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $24.88 - $29.68
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
Job offer is contingent on successful engagement in the UC COVID-19 Vaccination program (fully vaccinated with documented proof or approved exception/deferral).
If applicable, life-support certifications (BLS, NRP, ACLS, etc.) must include hands-on practice and in-person skills assessment; online-only certification is not acceptable.
