Elementary Mathematics Associate Director
Annually Salary Range - $94,047 – $103,250

The Washington State Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) seeks an experienced instructional leader to join the OSPI team as the Associate Director of Elementary Math. This full-time position is based in Olympia, Washington This position may be eligible for a partial telework schedule. Telework is a combination of in-building and off-site days. Position Overview
This position will build and implement a work plan that makes progress on strategic goals for the agency including:
- Equitable Access to Strong Foundations, increasing student access and participation in high-quality early learning and elementary by amplifying and building on inclusive, asset-based policy and practices.
This position will provide statewide elementary math leadership and support Washington’s early learning and elementary education system, increasing access to high-quality culturally responsive education for all students. It partners and collaborates internally and externally across subject areas, across grade-levels, and among OSPI departments. It also provides technical assistance and professional learning for math initiatives and policies affecting school districts, schools, educators, administrators, families, professional organizations, nonprofit organizations, and the public.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide leadership and implementation support of early learning and elementary math initiatives to support foundational access to learning including but not limited to:
- Numeracy
- Collaboration and conversation
- Multiple representation
- Support the review, revision, development and/or implementation of state content standards; models of instructional practice; instructional materials and resources; research, evaluation, and reporting; and professional learning that will enable schools to support student growth and ensure that graduates are prepared for postsecondary success.
- Support the development and dissemination of integrated content resources for districts, educators, and families with a focus on resources related to early numeracy development.
- Collaborate with Educational Service District (ESD) Regional Math Coordinators to develop and implement goals for statewide numeracy learning and teaching; develop common professional learning resources to support teachers and districts with learning standards and formative assessment; and support the Washington State Fellows' Network of teacher leaders serving elementary students.
- Collaborate with staff in Secondary Education and Pathway Preparation to provide vertical alignment and support of academic standards, instructional materials, and professional learning opportunities and K–12 Initiatives in support of students and educators.
- Provide instructional material guidance and professional learning that ensures adoption of bias-free standard-aligned curriculum and materials, increasing the confidence and capacity of schools, educators, families, and stakeholders to create culturally responsive and anti-racist educational communities.
- Develop and lead statewide initiatives and professional development opportunities based on district and school needs to support implementation of math standards, effective instructional practices in math based on current research, instructional assessment, and grading policies and progress, including best practices for supporting students with disabilities, English learners, migrant, highly capable students, and students eligible for learning assistance.
- Recommend and inform state level policies, directions, and procedures impacting elementary math implementation; collaborate with OSPI Professional Certification, the Professional Educator Standards Board (PESB), and the State Board of Education (SBE).
- Recommend and inform state level policies for legislative bills that impact math education. Provide testimony and bill analysis for legislative bills as needed.
- Write and edit responses to queries pertaining to math education, curriculum, instruction, and classroom assessment in Washington.
- Develop policy, budget proposals and analysis of proposed legislation.
- Demonstrate and promote individual and group interpersonal skills including but not limited to listening for understanding, influencing, mediation, consensus building and collaboration.
- Contribute to a workplace that is fair, safe, professional, and free from discrimination or harassment.
- Foster and support the organization’s diversity goals by:
- Maintaining the highest standard of personal, professional, and ethical conduct.
- Researching, developing, recommending, and executing creative strategies to evaluate and improve systems and processes through an equity lens, aligned with the organization’s diversity goals and antiracist objectives.
- Collaborate on data analysis, management, and reporting for state and federal reports, accountability, and legal compliance.
Required Qualifications:
- A degree majoring in elementary education, math education, or related field.
- A minimum of four (4) years of elementary education and/or district teaching and/or leadership experience in math, math education, curriculum development, instruction, program evaluation, program evaluation and/or assessment.
- Commitment to provide leadership in support of the agency’s anti-racist objectives and overall responsibility to close persistent opportunity gaps as the state education department.
- Experience and knowledge of creating culturally responsive and anti-racist learning environments.
- Strong commitment to Washington state public education and the principles of trust, teamwork, collaboration, and customer service.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally, including the ability to conduct both formal and informal presentations to both large and small groups.
- Proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Moodle or similar virtual learning programs.
Desired Qualifications:
- A Master's degree in elementary education, math education, curriculum development, or a related field.
- Demonstrated elementary school and/or district-level or professional organization leadership related to math instruction, resource material development, program evaluation, and assessment.
- Current knowledge of the Washington State K–12 math Learning Standards, effective instructional practices, research-based practices in math curriculum, instruction, and assessment, and school and/or district needs related to education reform efforts.
- Sound management practices, professional staff development, program planning, and individual and group decision making strategies.
Possess the ability to:
- Manage fiscal and other resources strategically.
- Communicate efficiently and effectively across a broad array of education groups and stakeholders in the education system, including written correspondence and technical documents.
- Write and edit with strong command of English grammar, editing rules, and practices for punctuation, composition, formatting, and proofreading.
- Develop and provide presentations to a variety of audiences.
- Utilize strategies for systematic and advanced management practice, project and program planning, budget planning and development, instructional leadership, professional development, individual and group decision-making, and collaborative long-range planning.
- Supervise and oversee projects and be accountable for accurate completion within expected timelines.
Compensation
The annual salary range for this position is $94,047 103,250 and depends upon experience, educational background, and qualifications. Geographic differentials may be applied based on the work location of a successful candidate. Washington State offers a generous benefit package including health, dental and life insurance, retirement, and an optional deferred compensation program. This position serves at the pleasure of the Superintendent, and is Civil Service Exempt. This position is not represented by a bargaining unit.
