Associate Artistic Director & Director of New Work
Job description
This leadership position works closely with the Producing Artistic Director in defining, planning, and achieving the innovative and anti-racist vision and mission of the FAC Theatre Company.

Responsibilities:
Leadership:
- Model a positive, proactive temperament for the entire Theatre Company staff.
- In consultation with the Producing Artistic Director, act as Lead Producer for specific productions and events throughout the season. Manage administrative and artistic issues that may arise in the absence of the Producing Artistic Director.
- Through conferences, festivals, and ones own artistic opportunities, develop and maintain deep relationships with other theatrical organizations and individuals locally, regionally and nationally.
- Supervise Education Programs Producer as they served as point person for all summer education classes and productions.
Artistic Programming:
- Direct, dramaturg, choreograph, perform in, and/or design productions as assigned by Producing Artistic Director.
- Work closely with Producing Artistic Director to create new education programs reflective of trends and aesthetic developments in the field.
- Maintain consistent, transparent, open lines of communication with the Producing Artistic Director about decision-making and issues that arise; assist with artist relations and problem-solving.
- Support and facilitate a constructive, collaborative dialogue with Communications, Patron Experience, and other departments, and ensure that everyone has necessary, accurate information in a timely manner.
New Work:
- In collaboration with Producing Artistic Director, build and supervise the new work development program that serves directors, playwrights, and multi-hyphenate artists.
- Regularly read new plays in consideration for developmental programming and productions in the mainstage season.
- Recommend potential artists and projects for future new work commissions.
Fiscal Responsibility:
- In partnership with the Producing Artistic Director and Director of Production, assist in budget preparation for each season.
- Facilitate dialogue to ensure that productions helmed by guest directors remain within the parameters of the Theatre Companys resources.
Casting Direction & Guest Artis Relations:
- Coordinate all auditions and callbacks.
- Prioritize forging relationships with local artists and seeing work at other theatres to ensure that the FAC Theatre Companys database of performers remains current and robust.
- In coordination with fellow staff, ensure that all Performing Arts personnel are contracted prior to beginning work.
- Support Producing Artistic Director in negotiating agreements with unions (i.e., AEA, SDC, USA-829, DGA) and ensuring that the Theatre Company consistently abides by all union guidelines.
Anti-Racism:
- Participate in ongoing anti-racism trainings and build an ever-growing competency and skillset in this area, including:
- a facility to see and interrupt white supremacy in daily practices
- create systems that disrupt unconscious bias
- resolve conflict with an anti-racist and restorative justice lens
- make decisions that repair harm, inequity, and discrimination
- Actively support the colleges plan to be an antiracist institution by understanding, engaging with, and promoting diversity, inclusion, and equity in the college community.
- Promote a culture of safety and environmental protection by working in a safe manner; immediately reporting unsafe
- situations and accidents; following college procedures; and participating in appropriate safety training.
- Demonstrate environmental sustainability by using college resources wisely and supporting the colleges sustainability initiatives and innovation.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
Bachelors degree in theatre or related field or equivalent experience plus a minimum of five years of professional experience in theatre as a director, choreographer, playwright, designer, actor, and/or dramaturg; prior supervision experience with demonstrated leadership in team building; excellent communication and collaboration skills; ability to communicate effectively and develop positive relationships with people from different cultural backgrounds; budget management, project development, and line producing experience. Proficient with personal computers and Microsoft Office.
Preferred Qualifications:
Masters degree in theatre or related field; six or more years of professional theatrical experience as a director, choreographer, playwright, designer, actor, and/or dramaturg. Strong relationships with other professional and regional theatres, and experience in fostering partnerships and inter-institutional collaborations.
