Job Summary and Qualifications

The job of Supplemental Teacher was established for the purpose of providing support to the instructional program within assigned school with specific responsibility for assisting in the supervision and instruction of special needs students, observing and documenting student progress; implementing plans for instruction; and assisting students by providing for special health care needs. The teacher assistant shall receive training and technical assistance from the teacher and the principal. Work involves assisting the teacher in an elementary school setting, which provides a comprehensive program to meet educational, emotional, social, health, nutritional, and psychological needs of children.

Performance Expectations

• Assists the teacher in planning and maintaining a safe, clean, learning environment and in assuring the well-being and safety of the children in his/her care
• Assist the teacher in planning and implementing activities with elementary age children, consistent with the curriculum guide, resources and training provided
• Exhibits a genuine caring attitude to all children
• Maintains a positive, calm attitude, and encourage this attitude in others working in the classroom
• Assists teacher to implement the developmental assessment for each child to determine the
• child’s strengths and areas in which each child may need help
• Plans with and assists the teacher in preparing materials and supplies in advance for activities.
• Assists the teacher in maintaining confidential child classroom folders
• Assists the teacher in maintaining a confidential assessment binder, consisting of developmental
• assessments, individual goals, and observations of progress toward meeting goals
• Work with the teacher to facilitate activities for all children both indoors and outdoors
• Shares in the development and implementation of written lesson plans with the teacher
• Protects all children from physical punishment or verbal abuse by anyone in any program
• activity, and immediately reports any such incident to the person in charge
• Observes children to detect signs of illness, injury, emotional disturbance, learning disorder,
• speech problem, or other special needs, and immediately report observations to the teacher for follow up
• Assists the teacher in entering accurate attendance records
• Demonstrates ability to carry out written lesson plans, the daily schedule, and all other duties of the teacher
• Assumes the teacher’s role in leading selected activities during designated parts of the class-day
• Assumes the teacher’s full role in the absence of the teacher
• Assists the teacher in safeguarding all classroom supplies and equipment
• Communicates with supervising instructional staff and professional support personnel for the purpose of assisting in evaluating progress and/or implementing IEP objectives
• Participates in the implementation of IEP goals for the purpose of meeting IEP goals and/or district benchmarks
• Participates in the implementation of student behavior plans for the purpose of ensuring effective and safe student learning
• Performs clerical tasks (e.g. making copies, filing, etc.) to prepare instructional materials
• Implements behavior management programs designed by teachers and/or school psychologist
• Counts and records specific student behaviors; administers procedures in the positive behavior support plan
• Observes and intervenes to redirect inappropriate behavior
• Assists, monitors, and guides the student to pay attention, participate in activities, and complete tasks
• Assists students with gross and fine motor activities
• Guides independent study, enrichment work, and review material set up and assigned by the teacher

What qualifications you will need:

• Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
• Nonviolent Crisis Intervention must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
• Drivers License
• High School Graduate / GED
