Job Description
The Old Dominion University F. Ludwig Diehn School of Music seeks qualified candidates for the tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Piano and Musicology. Duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Serve as Area Coordinator of the Applied Piano Area, including teaching applied lessons for undergraduate and graduate-level piano majors, preparing students to present degree recitals, and leading graduate thesis work;
- Lead Applied Piano Studio class with assistance from adjunct and full-time faculty;
- Lead Applied Piano juries;
- Oversee studio assignments for adjunct and full-time applied piano faculty;
- Oversee class piano curriculum;
- Oversee auditions in the Applied Piano area;
- Engage actively in recruitment for the Applied Piano program;
- Serve as Area Coordinator for the Music History area;
- Teach Music History courses at the undergraduate and graduate level;
- Oversee Music History curriculum
Evidence of ongoing research and creative activity at the regional, national, and international level will be expected of this position in fulfillment of the tenure and promotion process.
Service activity associated with the position will include internal committee assignments, recital attendance, college/university committee assignments, student advising, and developing a visible presence as a performer and educator on behalf of the F. Ludwig Diehn School of Music.

Minimum Qualifications - knowledge, skills, and abilities
- Evidence of expertise in the required teaching areas
- Evidence of current professional performing experience
- Evidence of ongoing engagement in artistic projects
- Evidence of other associated creative activity and/or research relevant to piano performance or musicology;
- Evidence of ongoing teaching experience in Applied Piano instruction;
- Evidence of professional qualifications to lead courses in a collegiate Music History sequence;
Minimum Qualifications - Education or training
Earned doctorate in Piano Performance, or Musicology/Music History/Ethnomusicology, or other terminal degree in music
Minimum Qualifications - Special licenses, registration or certification
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum two years of teaching music in a university setting;
- Evidence of ability to lead the second area outside of the candidate’s primary expertise
- Evidence of scholarly publications and conference presentations in music
- Candidates with an advanced degree in Piano
