Description of Duties

The Campus Safety and Security department is responsible for managing security services for

the Durham campus and its residential high school students, employees, visitors, and contracted workers. The Assistant Director of Campus Safety and Security for NCSSM Durham supports the school and department’s safety and security efforts. Specifically, the Assistant Director provides assistance for key operations within the department such as functional supervision of staff, emergency response/preparedness, and training for NCSSM community members, among other duties.

In addition, the Assistant Director coordinates protection of minor policies, protocols, training, and compliance activities aimed at ensuring that minors who participate in University Programs, or who participate in programs operated by third parties on NCSSM campuses are provided a safe and secure environment. The Assistant Director reports directly to the Director of Campus Safety for NCSSM Durham and works closely with the student life leadership team.

The Assistant Director will provide occasional coverage of security shifts, support for some school events and incidents occurring after-hours and during weekends.

This position is designated as mandatory in the event there is an emergency closing or adverse weather.

The Assistant Director

  • Serve as a Liaison for NCSSM Durham with contracted police force and local authorities.

  • Serve as an Investigator for NCSSM Durham.

  • Coordinate Protection of Minors policies, procedures, training, and correspondence for NCSSM.

  • Assist with the management and coordination of institutional training and functions at NCSSM Durham.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


  • Experience working in campus safety/public safety in a residential school setting (high school and/or college) is strongly preferred. This includes the following areas:

    • Development/implementation/enforcement of campus safety procedures

    • Knowledge of student conduct processes and procedures

    • Experience training campus safety team members and employees on campus safety procedures

    • Crisis Management and response

  • Experience as a supervisor whose responsibilities include completing performance evaluations and participating in the disciplinary process for subordinates.

  • Commitment to diversity among faculty, staff, and students.

  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with technology and other resources to maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of practices and procedures.

  • Demonstrated understanding of the roles that Student Life departments play in supporting the academic and student development of students attending a residential high school. (ex: Student Services, Housing/Residence Life, Counseling Services)

  • Ability to work with and effectively communicate with students, families, faculty, staff, and school leadership.

Minimum Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree and three years of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

CPR certification or ability to acquire CPR certification within 6 months of hire required.

Candidates must possess a valid North Carolina Driver’s License with a clean driving history.
