Summary

This position acts as a Prosecuting Attorney responsible for legal matters related to criminal offenses, traffic offenses, juvenile offenders care and treatment proceedings and appeals. The Assistant County Attorney works with defendants, victims, witnesses, and outside attorneys pursuant to Kansas law. This position is under the general direction of the County Attorney.

Litigate, manage case load, and perform legal duties for the prosecution of offenses.

  • Interact with the public, victims, witnesses and defendants to complete investigations and to obtain information related to legal proceedings.
  • Participate in and conduct negotiations with counsel.
  • Handle all proceedings involved in prosecution of cases including preliminary hearings, motions, mediations and trials.
  • Review current cases to determine the best course of action. Manage all cases assigned.
  • Review and research law enforcement records and reports statutes, court decisions and other legal documents.
  • Prepare legal documents, including offense charges and appeal briefs.
  • Represent the State at criminal and juvenile trials, hearings, and other court related proceedings.
  • Present oral and written arguments to District Court, Court of Appeals and Kansas Supreme Court.
  • Meet with agencies for determination and establishment of methods, procedures and protocols for the investigation and prosecution of cases involving violations of Kansas law.
  • Conduct research on various legal and technical evidentiary issues to determine the appropriate charges and levels of cases to be filed.

  • Assist law enforcement as requested.
  • Attend community organization meetings and give presentations as requested.
  • Review work of clerical staff as needed.

Additional duties may be assigned as business needs require.

  • Excellent verbal and written English language skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Proficient in basic computer systems and software (e.g. email, timekeeping software, work order inputs, video/audio conference calling)
  • Proficiency in clerical procedures, systems, and tools such as recordkeeping, filing, copier, dictation machines, scanner, 10 key, etc.
  • Ability to learn new case management software including but not limited to Weslaw and Lexis.
  • Ability to accurately prepare and comprehend complex legal documents.
  • Ability to make decisions and to use good judgment in dispensing information to the County, assisting agencies, and the public.
  • Ability to work independently and without instruction.
  • Knowledge of business letter writing and forms.
  • Knowledge of state criminal codes, State Code of Criminal Procedure, Code of Civil Procedure, State Administrative Regulations, and County Resolutions.
  • Knowledge of court proceedings and legal document preparation.
  • Licensed to practice law in Kansas
  • Occasional travel, required.
  • Occasional overtime, required.
