Job Description
TITLE: ASL Specialist/Deaf Mentor
LENGTH OF WORK YEAR: Follows the school calendar.
SALARY: Salary Schedule
QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor of Arts in American Sign Language (ASL) and Deaf Studies. Experience teaching and assessing ASL with deaf students in the K-12 setting. Bilingual Education (ASL/English) Mentor training. Experience writing and monitoring IEP goals.
JOB GOAL: To provide ASL support and instruction for students who are deaf/hard of hearing and to expose students to Deaf Culture and successful deaf adults in the deaf community.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide educational instruction and support for students who are deaf/hard of hearing with a focus on American Sign Language.
- Write and progress monitor IEP goals that focus on ASL (structure, syntax, grammar, etc.) in order to build a solid foundation in language development.
- Foster students’ academic and social development as appropriate to the student’s age and the academic setting.
- Educate students about the history, culture, and language of the deaf community.
PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT:
The ASL Specialist/Deaf Mentor is first and foremost a member of the educational team and the school community and should follow school and district guidelines and policies for professional behavior and conduct.- The ASL Specialist/Deaf Mentor should continue to develop knowledge and skills and should strive to maintain high professional standards.
SUPERVISOR: Supervised by the Executive Exceptional Student Services Director.
