Position Description
The Area Coordinator provides leadership and direction for a residential community that fosters student learning and development, contributes to a vital and engaged student experience, and promotes Seattle University’s mission. The AC is responsible for the management and coordination of operational functions associated with a highly effective residence hall environment. In addition, the AC serves in a collaborative role with other Housing and Residence Life (HRL) staff in the overall development of departmental programs, services and operations. This position is also actively involved with Student Development divisional programs and initiatives. The AC position oversees an area which consists of 1-7 buildings, with 220 – 650 students. The community oversight includes student staff (Graduate Assistant, Resident Assistant, and Desk Staff) supervision, Hall Council, Conduct Management, Building Management, and Crisis Management. The AC is a full-time, twelve month, live-in professional position and reports directly to an Associate Director in Housing & Residence Life.
Staff Development & Supervision
- Supervise up to 2 graduate-level Assistant Area Coordinators (AAC)
- Supervise 4-21 Resident Assistants (RA) and 7-14 Desk Staff student employees
- Motivate staff and empower them to create environments that promote student learning and development
- Assist in the recruitment, selection, and training processes for all student leader positions
Student Development
- Utilize student development theory to work with students to promote personal growth, academic excellence, civic responsibility, - compassion and respect for others in the halls
- Educate and hold residents accountable to the Seattle University code of conduct, residence hall policies and procedures
- Serve as a conduct administrator in developmental student conduct processes
- Provide care and crisis management support to on-campus students
Community Development
Develop and implement area-specific community development and student engagement plan that supports the needs of the diverse student body at Seattle University
- Support Assistant Area Coordinator in advising Residence Hall Council
- Coordinate residential theme and/or learning communities with RAs and campus partners
- Partner with Campus Ministry (Resident Ministers and Jesuits in Residence) to provide additional support in the halls
Fiscal Management
Manage building/area budgets that include: programming, office supplies, hall council events, and student staff payroll
- Utilize variety of purchasing methods to support events in community
- Utilize and manage university procurement card and reconciliation protocol
Building Operations Management
Work with building maintenance and custodial supervisors to address building and student needs related to the facilities
- Oversee the coordination of the front desk, which manages keys, mail and packages, and other customer service functions
- Facilitate processes to ensure physical spaces are kept in good condition and damages to the facility are tracked
Administration
Support departmental processes for move-in and closing of the residence halls
- Serve as part of professional staff 24/7 on-call duty rotation, including consultation to on-call RAs
- Serve on at least one departmental committee
- Assist with the implementation, and evaluation of HRL’s strategic plan
- Serve as the HRL liaison to other student development functional areas and other academic support units
- Perform other duties as assigned by HRL and the Division of Student Development
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, psychology, education or related field and two years of previous experience as a resident assistant in an educational setting demonstrating responsibility for assisting with the full range of responsibilities associated with being a residence director or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.- A demonstrated commitment to diversity issues and social justice is essential.

Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Higher Education, College Student Personnel, or related field and two years of previous experience in residence life or other student development and educational settings demonstrating responsibility for assisting with the full range of responsibilities associated with being a residence director.
- The ideal applicant will possess the ability to use student learning and development theory, a commitment to being student-centered and to the concepts of community, service and social justice, diversity, integration of academic and campus life, and holistic development.
- Excellent interpersonal, crisis management, managerial, and community development skills are necessary as well as an understanding and/or openness to the values of Jesuit/Catholic Higher Education.

Compensation at a Glance:
This is an hourly position with a $37,000 base pay with the ability for overtime and tether pay when on call. A furnished apartment, meal plan, and a parking pass are included in compensation. Additionally, we allow pets and partners via the apartment policy. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, and not based on a candidate’s gender or any other protected status.
