Aquatics Program Specialists

RATE: Full Time - $16.00 per hour

Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Aquatics Director, the Aquatic Program Specialist will cover a wide array of duties including lifeguarding, teaching swim lessons, pool maintenance, and pool safety.

Is responsible for safe, clean swimming conditions in the pool, deck and surrounding areas and must display the Y core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

Work Schedule:

Will collaborate with the Aquatics Director to ensure appropriate pool coverage. This may include opening hours, day hours, evening or closing hours.

Essential Functions

• Maintains active surveillance of the pool area.
• Immediately address any safety concerns, i.e., horseplay, excessive noise, running on deck, etc.
• Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants and other staff.
• Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
• Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
• Performs chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action.
• Attends all staff meetings and in-service training.
• Willing to instruct Lifeguarding classes under the Red Cross platform
• Instruct private and group swim lessons following a YMCA curriculum
• Lifeguard must effectively work with branch and core service leadership
• When staff shortages occur lifeguard must be willing to assist at other locations, when available

Job Specifications:

• Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergencies immediately and in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and the “safe-in-six” model. Completes related reports as required.
• Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area. Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code.

Certifications Required

• CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen.
• Current American Red Cross OR YMCA Lifeguard Certification or equivalent.

Physical Working Conditions:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to stand; walk on uneven surfaces; sit; handle or feel objects; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must be able to lift up to 25 pounds. The employee may be exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level is usually minimal to moderate.
