Would you enjoy conducting applied research in a fast-paced environment that offers a wide range of technical challenges? Are you interested in working for a company that values dedication in the workplace, promotes learning and professional development, and appreciates the importance of work-life balance?

Applied Research Associates, Inc. is seeking an Applied Statistician / Toxicologist to support multiple programs in the Health, Environment, Analytics, Risk, and Technology (HEART) Directorate at ARA, specifically, with the US EPA, the US FDA, and the Defense Threat Reduction Agency. If this sounds like your next job, we would like to talk with you about joining the Health, Environment, Analytics, Risk, and Technology (HEART) Directorate at ARA.

The successful individual will provide technical leadership in the review/application development of frequentist and/or Bayesian techniques to toxicological data sets, typically within the context of acute or chronic health risk assessments. Applications include characterizing the probability of adverse physiological effects due to exposure to chemical constituents in tobacco products, pharmaceuticals, and toxic industrial chemicals/chemical weapons. Familiarity with human physiology, toxicological study design/execution/analysis, and epidemiological study data is highly desirable. The ideal candidate will have an advanced degree in statistics and demonstrated experience in supporting human health risk assessments by deriving scientifically defensible dose-response functions. This position offers significant growth potential through multiple tracks, including business development with current and future clients, technical leadership in statistical analysis of toxicity and physiological data, and project/program management.

What you’ll do as an Applied Statistician / Toxicologist:

  • Work with multidisciplinary project teams to interpret toxicological data within the context of human health risk assessments
  • Provide technical leadership in the ongoing development of benchmark dose software, as well as the investigation of a wide range of issues involving the statistical interpretation of toxicological and epidemiological study data
  • Contribute to the development of methods to characterize the probability of cancer and non-cancer effects associated with exposure to chemical contaminants
  • As appropriate, work with software developers/engineers in developing custom software packages that meet client-specified requirements

Applied Statistician / Toxicologist Requirements:

  • Must be able to obtain a U.S. government security clearance, which includes U.S. citizenship
  • Bachelor's Degree in a related discipline, e.g., applied statistics, data science, toxicology/pharmacology, human biology along with 5-7 years of relevant work experience
  • Minimum of three years experience in relevant scientific research, ideally, as it relates to human health risk assessment
  • Demonstrated experience in the application of statistical methods to toxicological data sets, including both frequentist and Bayesian techniques
  • Experience in using scripting languages such as Python, R, or MATLAB
  • Well-developed research/writing skills, as evidenced by technical writing
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a research team, or to work independently with little supervision
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office products, e.g., Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Applied Statistician / Toxicologist Preferences:

  • An advanced degree in a related discipline is strongly preferred
  • Strong background in Bayesian techniques is strongly preferred
  • Direct experience in using STAN for Bayesian statistical analysis is preferred
  • Knowledge of computer science/application development
  • Training/experience in one or more of the following areas is desirable
    • Human biology/physiology
    • Pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics
  • Strong interest and/or experience in data science, especially Machine Learning
  • Experience with Jupyter Notebook is desirable
  • Active DoD security clearance is a plus
