Job DescriptionSeeking a hard-working, dependable team player to perform responsible public safety work enforcing animal control ordinances in the City of Henderson and Vance County. This is a rotating on-call position responding to service calls, weekend duty cleaning the shelter, and taking care of animals at the shelter.
Bilingual candidates encouraged to apply. Key Responsibilities and Related Competencies:
Investigates complaints and picks up stray animals; traps or tranquilizes animals; takes apprehended animals to the shelter; enforces animal ordinances.
Operates a pickup truck patrolling the City and County; uses animal handling equipment; sets traps and cages to collect wild and vicious animals.
Issues appropriate warning and citations; issues citations for violations of animal control ordinances.
Investigates reports of animal bites and enforces laws requiring confinement of animals for observation.
Investigates cases of cruelty to animals, and recommends appropriate action; takes wounded animals to veterinarians for care; may testify in court when necessary on a variety of cases and complaints.
Works at the Animal Shelter; feeds, waters, and cleans animals; cleans animal cages and replaces litter.
Answers the telephone and takes messages about stray animals; provides information about animals at the shelter and adoption procedures to telephone and visitor"s inquiries.
Completes forms and accepts fees for processing animal adoptions; records information on animal processing log.
Answers calls to assist law enforcement officers when vicious animals are present.
Administers rabies vaccinations.
Euthanizes animals at the county shelter and tranquilizes animals when needed.
Assists animal owners with wounded animals; disposes of dead animals.
Maintains completed records on activities; keeps logs on daily activities and calls.
Additional Job Duties
Attends classes to increase skills and certifications.
Performs related duties as required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
KSA - Working knowledge of State laws and local ordinances relating to rabies and animal control and confinement of animals.
Working knowledge of methods of safely capturing and caring for animals.
Working knowledge of breeds of animals to aid in identification of lost pets and to know aggressiveness of various breeds.
Ability to deal constructively and tactfully with the public and to maintain composure in stressful situations.
Ability to maintain accurate reports, to develop legal citations and warnings, and to testify in court when necessary.
Ability to operate a motor vehicle Desirable Education and Experience - Graduation from high school and some experience involving contact with the public and in handling and caring for animals; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preference will be given to bilingual candidates and Vance County residents. Physical Requirements and Work Environment
Must be able to physically perform the basic life functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Must possess the visual acuity to operate a vehicle and distinguish details and differences when observing breeds and colors of animals, and to operate a computer terminal and prepare records using data and figures. Additional Information
Special Requirement
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.
Training and certification for euthanizing animals and in administering rabies vaccination.
