Role
The R&D Contract Manager is part of a global cross-functional team that leads collaboration on R&D technology development through strategic partnerships and externally funded R&D. As part of this team, you will be responsible for negotiations, overall performance, successful technical execution, and management of R&D contracts with US Government and strategic external partners.
Manage all phases of contract management to include pre-award (planning, scoping, and developing contracts), award (contract negotiations and executing contract agreements) and post-award (contract management, deliverable execution, financial analysis, and reporting)
Ensure contract compliance with U.S. Government regulations and Trane Technologies’ policies
Work independently to manage multiple contracts simultaneously and develop, communicate, and maintain robust standard work.
The position will be based in Davidson, NC. This position will have a hybrid work arrangement.
Responsibilities
Oversee the administration of awarded contracts including negotiations, documentation, financial management and reporting in accordance with Company policies and legal requirements
Lead the development and deployment of an efficient and effective contract management process
Assist in the development of negotiation strategies, identify areas of contract risk, offer risk management strategies, and provide consultation and guidance to investigators, administrators, and other internal parties.
Maintain in-depth knowledge of Federal and State regulations, including FAR, DEARs and Trane Technologies’ policies, and maintain in-depth knowledge of cost accounting and audit standards
Serve as point of contact for internal stakeholders and liaison for external Proposal and Contract Managers; mentor and train as needed on contract process compliance
Provide comprehensive contract and business leadership including oversight of project teams necessary to plan, execute, and control contract performance
Ensure disciplined project control, including effectively evaluating and managing major and minor process changes and customer requests
Build and maintain strong relationships with strategic partners’ contract offices including U.S. Government funding agency offices (DOE), universities, National Labs, and business partners
Assist in proposal generation, SOW creation, IP management plans
Communicate proposal objectives and status clearly for senior leadership approvals and Cross-Business Unit awareness
Communicate contractual concepts to non-legal colleagues in business context
Coordinate closely with Legal team on intellectual property and other key issues for negotiations

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in business, legal studies, or contract management with 5+ years professional experience required. Master’s Degree in related field is preferred.
5+ years of professional experience in contract negotiation required.
Experience negotiating government contracts, terms and conditions specifically for Government-funded R&D contracts and cooperative agreements is required.
Ability to identify and resolve contractual risks consistent with company policies
Comprehensive knowledge of general corporate business practices, U.S. commercial contracting regulations and principles, subcontracting practices, and accounting and finance principles.
Demonstrated experience collaborating across functions and levels to provide guidance related to contract drafting, contract negotiation, execution, and reporting.
Demonstrated ability to influence without authority
Demonstrated experience and knowledge of Government Contracting processes and FARs, DoE experience preferred
Demonstrated experience and knowledge of Intellectual Property, Contracts, and Patent processes.
Demonstrated ability to develop, support, and implement new processes and metrics.
Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to communicate to stakeholders at all levels
Demonstrated ability to work with minimal direction and drive projects to closure
Excellent attention to detail
Proficiency in personal computer applications and software (Microsoft Suite)
U.S. citizen or have the legal right to work in the U.S. without requiring sponsorship now or in the future
Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated understanding and application of the FAR, Government policies and/or other government contract regulations
Experience with managing contracts, sub-contracts, contractual flowdowns including:
Contract Types: T&M, Cost Plus, FFP, CRADA, NDA, and multiparty NDA
Federal Standards & Regulations: FAR, DEAR supplements
Compliance: GAO and OMB standards
Export control & intellectual property restricted data
NCMA/NGMA certification (CGMS, CFCM, CPCM) is a plus
Demonstrated success in contract negotiation for protection of intellectual property rights
Proficient in Project Management fundamentals with experience leading project teams across geographic and functional areas
Base Compensation Range is $68,500- 130,000 annually. *Disclaimer: This base salary range is based on US national averages. Actual base pay could be a result of seniority, merit, geographic location where the work is performed.
