Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Founded in 1924, the Odum Institute for Research in Social Science provides training, consultation, and research support services to faculty, staff, and students across the UNC-Chapel Hill campus and beyond. Odum expands Carolina’s impact by providing education and support for planning, implementing, and disseminating research. We work to advance rigorous and reproducible research across the data, social and health sciences, while building collaborative, trans-disciplinary research networks. Positioned in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, the Institute is funded through state/university appropriations and grants/contracts led by Institute staff.

Position Summary
The Odum Institute is seeking one to two new transcriptionist(s) to join our
research data transcription service.
The new transcriptionist(s) will work with our lead transcriptionist to support ongoing audio transcription projects. They will be responsible for transcribing audio recordings of focus groups and interviews submitted by researchers, accounting for client preferences in formatting, and proofreading transcripts. They will also be required to complete CITI training to familiarize themselves with IRB and sensitive data protocols prior to beginning any transcription projects.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalency
- 2 years of audio transcription experience (personal or professional)
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Experience with medical transcription and sensitive data
- Experience with closed captioning and subtitle writing
