Job description
The activity specialist will have specialized skills and expertise in one or more discipline or content are to lead and implement an activity such as arts, dance, STEM, literacy, nutrition or organized sports. Regardless of discipline, activities are to be sequenced, skill-building activities. Activity specialist will be available to work Monday – Friday from 2pm-6pm for After-school and weekends during the school year; and during the summer Monday – Friday, 8am-6pm. Activity Specialist schedules can be flexible. The Activity Specialist will work with the Program Director to develop a set schedule that accommodates their availability.
Activity specialists must be available to work Monday - Friday 2-6 PM.
Responsibilities:
- Uses positive approaches when handling difficult situations. Avoids gossip and negative discussions. Remains flexible and adapts to change.
- Serves as role model for program participants. Abides dress code. Conducts self in a professional manner at all times.
- Remains sensitive and responsive to cultural differences of program participants and staff.
- Participates in in-service trainings and on-site workshops as required for professional growth and development. Attends external trainings and workshops at direction of management.
- Represents the organization both within and outside of the work environment in a manner that promotes the mission, vision and values of the agency. Personally, adheres to organizational mission, vision and values, in addition to all other agency policies and procedures.
- Assist in the development of age appropriate activities in one or more discipline or content area.
- Implement sequence skill-building activities that are part of a large curriculum.
- Create activity plans that accurately reflect content area.
- Provide direct supervision of youth activities.
- Assist in maintaining daily attendance records for program participants.
- Assist in the provision of basic counseling services as needed (peer mediation, self-control, decision making).
- Accompany youth on cultural and recreational field trips.
- Assist in ensuring a safe environment for program participants.
- Actively participate in all professional development sessions, supervision and team meetings.
REQUIREMENTS:
- High School diploma and two years' experience working with youth or an Associate's degree in child development, recreation or a related field.
- Must be able to work in Coney Island, Brooklyn.
- Activity specialists must be available to work Monday - Friday 2-6 PM.
