Job Description

The Iowa Veterans Home is looking for an Activities Assistant Driver.

Responsibilities include:

• Must have Class B CDL with Passenger certification and air brake endorsements to drive vehicles.
• Must be a Certified Nursing Assistant or be willing to obtain within 6 months.
• Assists Activities Specialists in loading resident onto vehicles in a safe and efficient manner, securing the residents and unloading them at designation.
• Helps Recreation staff assigned to trip to implement a positive experience for residents when on community trips.
• Provides one-to-one assistance to residents on trips such as shopping, out to eat, tours, concerts etc. Interact with residents, staff and volunteers.
• Will work a schedule that is determined by trip destination, in-facility activities and other duties.
• Drive state vehicles including buses, vans, caravans and small wheelchair bus.
• Will take vehicles for repair and pick-up or wait for vehicle to be repaired as needed. Needs mechanical skills in performing simpler task repairs, such as: light bulb replacement, bending fold out steps back. Will clean out vehicles inside and out as needed. Perform basic first aid techniques, along with ability to recognize signs and symptoms of ill health. Operate wheelchair lift, load residents onto wheelchair lift, unload residents and secure in vehicle. Use safe body mechanic techniques when transferring residents.
• Practice safe and correct procedures for handling weather emergencies while off IVH grounds.
• Ability to plan, coordinate and execute other off-grounds activities with or without an Activity Specialist involvement.
• When not on trips will assist Recreation staff with activities within facility and other duties assigned by supervisor.

Under the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS’s) new vaccine mandate for healthcare workers (published on November 5, 2021 and affirmed by the United States Supreme Court on January 13, 2022), all potential employees of this facility must have received, at a minimum, the first dose of a primary series or a single dose vaccine OR have an approved religious or medical exemption (as determined by the Iowa Veterans Home) OR have documentation reflecting a temporary delay in vaccination (as determined by the agency in accordance with CDC allowances), prior to the start date. Candidates shall coordinate with agency staff to ensure all requirements are met before the individual provides any care, treatment, or other services for the facility and/or its residents.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Experience equal to two years of full-time work in a recreational, arts, crafts, or music activity program;

two years of post high school education in art, music, physical education, recreation, the social/behavioral sciences or closely related areas; an equivalent combination of education and experience in one of the above areas substituting up to a maximum of thirty semester hours for one year of experience; employees with current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes experience equal to eighteen months of full-time work as an Activities Aide.
