Summary:
The Access Consulting Physician will lead initiatives to integrate with the acute care hospital systems to guide appropriate post-acute care placement. This position will provide education and direction to acute care hospital staff on admission criteria for various levels of post-acute care. The Access Consulting Physician will review all referrals and consults and work with the Access Team for inpatient rehabilitation placement when appropriate. The physiatry consult service, inclusive of clinical liaisons, will ensure that all medically appropriate patients have access to the Mary Free Bed Network of rehabilitation. The Access Consulting Physician will work in conjunction with the clinical liaisons and Medical Director of Access to establish best practices with all Mary Free Bed Network physicians for consistent admission criteria. Key performance metrics include onset days, acute care length of stay targets, and post-acute care utilization benchmarks. The Access Consult Physician will work with all key acute care clinicians for consistent admission criteria and alongside Access leadership to drive referral development and a systematized approach to the MFB philosophy of Rehab.
Age Specific Responsibility:
Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned department. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department’s policies and procedures.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
- Actively promotes the services of Mary Free Bed Network in a positive manner to the professional community and the community at large.
- Work collaboratively with MSU physicians to provide an efficient consult service through shared initiatives and key performance metrics.
- Reviews consults and referrals for medical necessity with clinical liaisons and attending physicians.
- Works in collaboration with and provides supervision to Access APP for inpatient disposition determination where applicable.
- Rounds at local hospitals to provide support for therapy and disposition recommendations.
- Speaking and presenting through MFB Education Academy.
- Assists in assigning patients to medical service based on diagnosis through communication with attending inpatient physicians.
- Provide feedback to referring physicians on admission criteria and reasons for acceptance or denial.
- Review insurance denials when necessary.
- Ensure proper patient admission coverage – both physician and mid-level where applicable.
- Monitor inpatient census and help prioritize admissions and level load to physician services.
- Work with admission department on process improvement for safe and timely patient transfers.
- Leads tele – consult initiative for inpatient evaluations.

Essential Job Qualifications (Knowledge, Education, and Training Requirements):
- Board Certification in physiatry.
- Experience working with payers on denial reviews.
- Knowledge of quality improvement processes and measurement and demonstrated ability to monitor and improve quality of care.
- Knowledge of the clinically related standards and requirements of the State, Joint Commission, CARF, Medicare, and Medicaid and experience in maintaining accreditation and compliance,
- Ability to market Mary Free Bed at Covenant and other Mary Free Bed network locations to key physician leaders and groups.
- Proficient in public speaking, word processing, data management and PowerPoint.
- Physical Demands: Ability to work long hours dealing in challenging and stressful situations, and the ability to drive and travel independently,
Other Preferred Job Qualifications
- Networking activity to promote inpatient rehabilitation through committees and organizations.
- Board Certified in Physiatry.
