The Office of Student Affairs provides comprehensive assistance to prospective and current students in the areas of admission, financial aid, advising, orientation, placement testing, disability services, tutoring services and student activities. Advisors are available to help students learn about, degree options, majors, academic requirements, and the process of transferring. Help is also available in assessing career goals, planning a return to school, adjusting to academic life, or other areas of concern relevant to beginning or returning to college.
Job Summary
This is a fixed-term renewable academic staff position. The regular hours for this position will be between the hours of 8:00 am – 5:00 pm Monday-Friday at 40 hours/week year-round. Occasional evening and weekend hours are required. This position will be located on the Washington County Campus.Minimum Qualifications

The
Academic Advisor is located in the College of General Studies Student Affairs Office and reports directly to the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs. The Academic Advisor is a strategic member of the Student Affairs and responsible for providing professional academic and career advising to new and continuing students with additional direct responsibilities in the areas of financial aid, student accessibility, and recruitment and retention. The Advisor also works with the TRiO Student Support Services program to guide participants in consultation with the director of the program. The Academic Advisor meets with students to provide clear academic course selections and/or plans and strategies, and follows up with career advising in efforts for students to successfully complete their academic curriculum while at the same time, explore and exploit related career opportunities. Knowing the academic and career objectives of students, the Academic Advisor may also refer or recommend any/all available/necessary and/or required academic and/or intervention programs throughout the student’s academic career in the Colleges to ensure the students’ successful academic curriculum completion. Academic Advisors are experts at advising and highly cross-trained with a strong understanding and command of UWM’s admissions, financial aid, veterans, accessibility, student conduct and enrollment services. Academic Advisors also have responsibility to provide direction and guidance for student workers in the Student Affairs Office.

- Bachelor’s degree
- One year or more for working in a student services setting in higher education
- Master’s degree in Higher Education, Counseling or related field
- Evidence of experience working with diverse populations
- Demonstrated experience working in higher education in the area of career and academic advising
- Evidence of experience working collaboratively with colleagues in a team environment
- Evidence of excellent verbal and written communication skills
